Secrecy for Incentives

According to the Orlando Sentinel May 2, 2006, the State House passed HB
1285 by a vote of 81-33. This bill, and its mirror version in the
Senate SB 1136, exempt records relating to applications for "incentive"
packages from the Sunshine Laws. This is a true outrage and deserves
immediate condemnation from all Libertarians. How can we possibly
condone secret consideration for the expenditure of state revenue on
corporate welfare. If our esteemed legislature truly believes that this
graft is beneficial to the State, they should be proud of their work and
display it to the world. We should all be able to see the claimed new
jobs, average wages, etc. that are supposed to result from these
economic development programs and be able to review the results in
comparison to the promises made.

Of course these programs cannot stand up to the light of day and these
bills are an admission of that simple fact. They cannot demonstrate
lasting benefits from these programs and wish to remove them from the
public eye. Perhaps this is in part a response to our initiation of a
ballot initiative to End Corporate Welfare. Please join our effort by
visiting www.EndCorporateWelfare.com, signing the petition, having
family, friends and neighbors sign the petition, and contribute to our
cause. Also contact your legislators immediately to oppose passage of
bills HB 1285 and SB 1136. We can make a difference if we take a few
minutes to make our voice heard!
